Alaska is a awful big country Zach. What do you consider you neck of the woods? I’ve ben a member for about 20 years, I’m down on POW.October 29, 2013 at 12:11 pm #8063
Not from AK, but from VA. Looking at going on an unguided hunt next Sept for Caribou – Western Artic Herd. My buddy had been roped by a guide service called “We Guide Alaska”. Do you have any knowledge of them? Any info would be greatly appreciated!October 29, 2013 at 1:22 pm #8069
I’ve been in SE Alaska since ’65. Every year, I tell myself, “this is the year I’m gonna go north after moose and ‘bou”!
Have yet to make it. The heck of it is, I’m in my late 70s now, and probably never will! Will just have to be content with huntin’ these islands for deer.

Down on the Kenai Peninsula. Been here since 80 and Allen moose hunting is with your car anymore.November 2, 2013 at 3:22 pm #8336
The heck of it is Bob, huntin’ just isn’t as much fun as it was when I was a kid. Bones hurt to durn much. Besides, for what it would cost to take the ferry north, and back again, I could durn well pay for a whole beef and have it shipped up. Think that I’ll just have to leave the hard to get to huntin’ for the wealthy and young’uns.November 3, 2013 at 3:56 pm #8365
Yes I do know what you mean Allen, not as easy or cost effective as it once was. I have passed on many of trips just because of cost to do so. Take care and hope one of those sitka deers comes through your yard after you have had your Wheaties.

The wife and I got 3, opening day, and now that we are getting colder weather, I’m thinkin’ that we might go back out tomorrow. We still get out and beat the bush, but I leave all the hard work to my lady.

Glad to hear you still hunt. Shame when you get to the point where your body won’t let you. Really hate to think about it. Also sounds like you found yourself a keeper. Gotta love a lady that hunts. Good luck out there and get a couple more for the freezer. BobNovember 4, 2013 at 5:38 pm #8427
Indeed Bob, a lady that enjoys gettin’ out there with ya, gettin’ soakin’ wet, filthy dirty, muddy and bloody, and actually enjoys it, is priceless. We went out this morn’ for a bit. Seen a nice 3 point out in the Alpines. but it didn’t stick around long enuff to get a shot, but none the less, my lady took off after it. I gotta go too, because of all the wonderful attributes she has, she has one BIG flaw! when it comes to directions, she doesn’t know which way is up! She can get all turned around and lost, quicker then anybody else in this whole durn world! We didn’t get sight of that feller again. Gave up after 1/2 hr. or so.November 4, 2013 at 6:16 pm #8428
I went hunting with a friend one time that got lost walking a hill. It only ran in two ways and he couldn’t figure out which way he was walking. Last time I went with him. I mean I can see getting turned around in the trees and brush but on a clear hill running in just two direction, no excuse. Besides he didn’t leave the car keys where he said he was going to, left them in his pocket. Stupid me didn’t check up on that before we left the car. Lesson learned for me too.
Still sounds like a wonderful lady and you take care of her and yourself. Got to get but I wish you the best in your hunting and maybe someday we will meet. BobDecember 9, 2013 at 8:14 pm #10152
Sorry it has taken so long to reply. Been working entirely too much and not hunting enough. Now that all my opportunities to hunt are done for the season its time to focus on ice fishing and I’m looking to learn trapping this year. My neck of the woods is the Wasilla. I guess I could have been a little more specific. Just didn’t see any threads in the Alaska region forum. If anyone finds their way my direction, hit me up. Always looking for an excuse to get out after something.
Bowhntm; never used a guide up here. Just done my research and scouting and occasionally gotten some help from friends here to find game. I’ve never used a guide as I enjoy the scouting and research as much as the hunt. It’s always good to talk with others and try and learn from their experiences. But for me its about getting out and making my own experiences and memories.
Allen, there’s nothing wrong with the Sitka deer. I’m sure they’re a lot less work than a moose once you get them down. That’s when the real work starts.
I did get a caribou this year out in Chicken with a group of buddies. Had to work hard for that one and beat up my gear before it was all said and done. But I’ll never forget this one as it was my first. Didn’t get a moose this year, but not from a lack of trying. I spent countless days, afternoons after work and long weekends on the stalk. Saw more cows and juvenile bulls than I could count. Saw one that may have been legal while out with my bow but could never get a clear view through the brush and decided it was a safer call to let him walk. Gonna have to stock up on fish I guess.
Hope everyone else had a successful season and will talk with you soon.
