I have been hunting elk ever since being old enough to hunt in Wyoming. I have never had any luck on getting a bull, other than a spike a few years back. I am a meat hunter, so I always shot the first elk I saw, which has always been a cow or the spike. The area I hunt is now a bull only area, because the Wolf have reduced the Elk herd in this area outside of Jackson Wyoming. My son passed away last year and we spread his ashes on an overlook with a view of the Teton Mt Range. He was my hunting partner and always there to spot elk for me. I put up a memorial for him this year and had stopped by the memorial to have a talk with him. I asked him to help his Dad get an Elk, because since losing him, my luck has not been very good. After leaving the memorial site, I went down the four wheeler trail and within a few minutes had a calf and cow walk in front of me. I got off my four wheeler and looked back in the trees where they came from and there was a nice 6×6 bull. I took the shot and he took a few steps, falling right in the middle of the trail. My hunting partners came up and helped me get him back to camp. While skinning him, we had a Grizzly Bear walk into camp. We finally got the bear to run off after several shots in the air. Two days later we were driving down the four wheeler trail. When we got to the spot I shot my bull, we noticed a bear had covered the gut pile. It was then that I heard a bark, looked up and saw a Grizzly charging us. I hollered at the guy in front of me to go and when he did, he lost control of his wheeler, crashing into some trees, I looked behind me and saw the Grizzly coming full speed behind me. I took off hitting a trail marker. At this same time my friend who crashed was off his wheeler with his 44 magnum in hand shooting right behind me. The first shot stopped the Grizzly and a second shot in the air turned it and it ran off. He said the Grizzly was ten foot away from me when it stopped. After winching his four wheeler out of the spot he ran off, we noticed the bear coming back. We got out of there. We did end up getting four bulls out of four of us. I know it may sound crazy, but I felt my son was guiding me and is smiling down on his 64 year old dad.
