Don’t get me wrong, I love to hunt with my muzzleloader but I do it in January. October and November is for bowhunting. This 2 day antlerless only muzzleloader hunt here in Ohio is the dumbest thing DNR has done for deer hunting. Just my opinion.
Took my granddaughter out this morning with the crossbow. Fortunately the farm we hunt was not over run with gun hunters. Didn’t see any deer while sitting in the blind but when I was checking one of the trail cams a nice doe went running through the woods. Then we were scouting another spot to put a blind and another nice doe was trying to sneak down along the creek bank.
Go home with the sd card and discovered I have the camera set on video instead of photo. Turns out to be a good thing. Saw 3 different bucks tending to a scrape by the camera. It’s good to see signs that the prerut is getting started. In about 2 weeks we should be golden for her to get her first buck.October 13, 2013 at 8:33 pm #6269
I like the idea and no it is not because i got my doe. The weather sucked! Way too hot! Nothing was moving. Would like this to be much later.October 14, 2013 at 10:24 pm #6341
I feel the same way about the ML early hunt. Congrats on the doe Rubble. I had been following the progress of the meetings the ODNR had in the spring and early summer. Most of the louder voices were Muzzle Loading groups. The ODNR claims politics weren’t involved. I think its a goofy idea. Chances are its always going to be warm this time of year.
JP, thats pretty cool you got those pics. I’ve never used a trail camera but have been thinking about it. Most members at our club use them and usually get pics of the bucks I end up encountering. Funny. Wifey and I will head out Thurs. Weather should be good but the moon will have deer moving mid-day. Thats not bad either………..October 17, 2013 at 2:10 pm #7067
I thought the M.L. season was a joke, We were hunting in south part of ohio and the weather was way to hot. Also all the deer we did see were bucks. That figures.October 17, 2013 at 3:18 pm #7072
I took my graddaughter out with the crossbow Saturday morning. By 9:00 it was too warm to hunt. The state is reporting 5800 deer killed. Congrats to everyone that bagged one. My complaints with a ML season in October are 1. it’s too damn warm and 2. if DNR wants more does killed, let us use the antlerless permit during gun season and let us use more than 1 permit per county.
My opinion is DNR just didn’t think this through and there was very little consideration given to what hunters want and what hunters know. But, opinions are like a__holes, everyone has one.October 23, 2013 at 6:34 am #7454
Ilive and hunt in Ohio. I also hunt in Indiana and the cost is high to hunt in Indiana but I really like to gun hunt and in Indy once the mid November gun season starts pretty much it is gun season into January. I like the 2 week gun season in Indy and able to use my smokepole. I do like bow hunting But Ohio gun season is so rushed to hunt any of the gun season that you have to cram it in in just a couple days. along with all the other hunters. The dear are on high alert 24-7 in Ohio all season. SO IN Ohio I PRETTY MUCH HUNT WATERFOWL, and deer in Indiana.October 23, 2013 at 7:51 am #7459
I agree about the gun season being too short in ohio. The farm where I hunt will be over run with gun hunters and just ruin the hunting for the rest of the season. By 8:00 on the first morning the season is pretty much over. Last year on the first day of season I came out of my blind at 9:00 and didn’t go back the rest of the week. I was afraid of getting shot. I knew only a couple of the hunters. I know the rest of those clowns didn’t have permission. Gun season should be longer, Like 15 days so everyone is not out there trying to get their deer on the first morning.
I wish someone would hunt some of these geese around my place. Every morning, I can set my watch by it, 2 big flocks with fly off the lake behing me, fly over my house and leave goose crap all over my truck.October 23, 2013 at 6:06 pm #7485

would like to see ohio do it’s gun season like Illinois does theirs.have a split season.have the traditional start on Monday after thanksgiving for 5 days and have a 4 day season 2-3 weeks later and keep the late ml season(ohio) and allow the antlerless tags to be used.if they(ohio) want to do the early ml doe only,do along with youth season.
