What a travel day on Sunday before the opener. Somerset to Shippensburg wasn’t bad (except heavy traffic on the turnpike) but the trip from Ship to DuBois seemed to take forever. Finally got in about 7 PM.
Monday morning, I saw a total of 15 deer (I think, might have been a couple of repeats) including a small 5 point that I passed and a 10 inch spike. A buddy saw a decent 8? point but no shot at it. Very few hunters out, some shooting but no barrages. Tuesday, I saw 4 including a 4 point. Doe season opened today (Sat.) but I didn’t make it. I came home from work early on Friday, planning to load the Jeep and head north when I started throwing up. So here I sit, feeling better but not sure I want to tackle the local woods.
Round on me but only ginger ale for me and my tender tummy,

Well hunting season is over and Christmas is almost here …….Merry Christmas to all ye merry gentlemen and ladies…..and then time to hunt some more breakin out the smokepole and chase the deer again………Good look and God bless you allDecember 15, 2013 at 6:57 pm #10372
Guess I’m done and eating tag soup for the year. Did make it hunting this weekend but no luck. Friday, I got out for an hour, came in (dark) as the wife was leaving to see some friends, she called me a minute later to tell me there were 3 deer at the end of the driveway. Figures.
Saturday, hunted most of the day, saw one deer bouncing through the brush with no chance for a shot. A buddy of mine bagged a big 8 point with 19 inch inside spread at 8:30 AM and his son saw a bigger one. So there were some left.
I’m having shoulder surgery this coming Friday so the new muzzleloader will have to wait until next fall to see the woods.
Set ‘em Cindy, Scotch for me and whatever the rest want.

After the Eagles game yesterday I could use a stiff drink. Make mine a shooter of OLD#7.
skwirl, the guys at camp didn’t do so hot this year. Only one smallesh button buck. Not sure how much hunting was done with that crew.
Definitely will see you this spring for gobblers and fishees.
Hey dk, I’m like you, but… I throw some taters and veggies in the tag soup and turn it into stew. T G for the boys, they fill the freezer for me every year. I get to clean, oil, and wipe down all the rifles, plus stuff bullets for all of them. I’m a happy old fart. Now let’s get ready for flintlock season.
This year we had 25 lbs of venison turned into garlic ring baloney. OMG, I wish I could put a ring on the bar for you guys, it’s better than Sharon Stone. Well, maybe not better, but equal. OK OK it’s real good.
I’m ready for another shooter of OLD#7 and a round for the bar.

Quiet here. Typing with one hand is a PIA. Still popping some pain pills but far less than I was. My neighbor was out today, said he saw deer but no shot so I guess there are some around yet. Hope everyone had a good Christmas and Happy New Years to you all.
Set ‘em up,

Hope all had a Merry Christmas and wishing everyone the best and happiest of New YearsDecember 31, 2013 at 10:25 pm #10993
Wishing all friends and foes a very HAPPY NEW YEAR, may it be a safe one also.January 1, 2014 at 8:54 pm #11012
Glad you all stopped in the cantina. My grandkids abducted my lap top days ago, I just captured it back for an hour or so.
Hope all had a great Xmas and wish all a Happy & Healthy New Year. They’re calling for temps in the 30′s tomorrow. I’m heading out with the flintlock tomorrow hoping for a plump doe.
Hey dk, have you heard from shovel lately? And why the one hand typing?
OLD#7/ginger for me and a round for the bar.

I got an email a couple of months ago from shovel and have forwarded a few jokes but haven’t heard from him in awhile. one handed because the left arm is in sling following shoulder surgery on Dec 20. Not like 4 years ago when I popped my knees and started hanging out here but bad enough.
website ‘upgrade’ sure sucks, I only pop in once a week or so, even with plenty of time on my hands.
Now that I’m off the good drugs, I can drink. Scotch for me and a round for all.

Well tank you kind sir, I’ll have the usual, OLD#7/ginger.
Shoulder surgery….. yuk….guess the smoke pole will have to wait until next year. It’s too dam cold now anyway. Tomorrow should be a good day to see and/or track those deerskeys. I had to wear a face mask today while running the snow blower to open up the driveway. I’m hitting the woods tomorrow for sure.
Well I hope shovel is OK, he’s probably lovin this website also.
Drinks on the snake.

Well, I can type with two hands now but have to lift my arm up with the good hand and then let it rest on the desk. I was really looking forward to hunting the flintlock season but it just worked out better to have the surgery sooner than later. It was really starting to hurt all the time during deer season. Darn right it is cold, minus 8 when I looked a few minutes ago (10:45 PM). And the wind is howling.
Maybe Irish coffee should be the drink of choice tonight!

dk thanks for the taxidermy tips and sorry it took so long to reply, this new site sucks so much I hardly ever visit now.January 8, 2014 at 6:47 am #11264
It only took me about a month to start to find my way around this new format and I’am still lost.January 8, 2014 at 1:46 pm #11302
Steel, you’re welcome. Truth be told, I had too look back and see what we were talking about. This website is the slowest (BY FAR) of the ones I visit. Seems each time they do something, it gets worse.
Oh well,it’s still faster than the Pony Express

Not too much goings on in this gin mill lately. I may just buy the joint, and to drum up business…….drinks will be free to all VETS and HUNTERS.
dk, hope your shoulder is on the mend. My son just found out that the large buck he missed in NY during archery, was shot in their smokepole season. The lucky guy is from here in Pine Grove, and my son knows him. There’s a bunch of local guys hunt NY in the same area. Word did get around about the large buck my son missed back in the fall, and the hunt for him was on…big time. My son even took a weeks vacation the next week after the miss, and hunted him for 6 straight days, saw him twice on 2 separate days 70—80 yds out, too far for the Mathews. Then another 5 days in their rifle season with no sightings. Well, it was killed on the same ridge about 200 yds from the tree my son shot out of. Not sure about the width, but it scored 168 B&C. Will try a get a pic to post(if I can fig’r out how to post on this wonderful site).
Drinks on the snake, make mine an OLD #7/ginger.
