As a proud and blessed member of the shooting sports media, I get to see and experience a lot of cool things. Sometimes I need to slap myself in the face to avoid becoming desensitized. While a lot of my elder veteran outdoor journalists generally possess a “been there, done that” mentality (and they’ve earned it) regarding a great number of hunts, trade shows, etc., there’s one event that continually seems to put a sparkle in their eyes: the Safari Club International (SCI) Annual Hunters’ Convention.
After all the hoopla I’ve heard about the convention, finally I get to check it out firsthand from Feb. 5-8!
I’m returning to Las Vegas, not long after SHOT Show, to partake in the festivities offered by SCI at this world-famous gathering. And the festivities are numerous: art exhibits, concerts, auctions, seminars, outfitters from around the world, innovative hunting gear and outlandish guns … the list goes on. From what I’ve heard and read, the convention has more to offer than the average person can soak in during its 4 days.
If you’re planning to attend the convention, be sure to wave me down if you see me among the masses. (I’ll be the guy stumbling around like a trophy housewife at a shopping mall). If you’re not planning to attend, maybe you should. You can register for the convention right here. (You need to be an SCI member to attend!)
Realize, the impact of our attendance is much more significant than simply “having a good time.” The dollars raised by the SCI Convention are filtered directly into the extremely vital efforts of SCI to protect and enhance hunter rights in the United States and abroad. It’s a fact that SCI contributes more money and fights harder for hunter rights than any other single organization in America. We all know our hunting heritage is under attack—constantly—and this is one way to strengthen our stronghold before it crumbles.
As I revel in my first SCI Convention experience, I’ll be sharing personal highlights right here in my Mixed Bag blog. Stay tuned. …
