Many turkey-call manufacturers include protective lids for their glass and slate pot calls to ensure the calling surface stays clean, dry and in working order.
But if you have a call that doesn’t have a cover, head to the nearest household recycling bin and rummage for one. Small lids from butter, cream cheese and sour cream containers might fit your call perfectly (or with a little stretching).
If you can’t find a perfect match, a top that is a little too big will still work. Punch a hole in the oversized lid and tie on a rubber band. Cut a slit in the opposite end for a catch. Now it will stay on tight.
But for safety sake, avoid the solid colors of a gobbler’s head (red, white or blue). Look for clear, yellow, brown or gray lids instead. Or, simply dress-up a wrong-colored lid with some black or camouflaged tape.
