It’s a continuous rant most of us take part in—myself included: ”Kids these days. They’re so wrapped up in their computers, video games and other distractions. It seems like they’re less interested in the outdoors and hunting all the time. What can we do about it?”
It’s true. It’s a growing struggle to get the attention of youngsters and get them involved with the outdoors. I stumbled upon an exciting and relatively new organization today when I opened a random e-mail in my usual stream of press releases and product plugs. It looks like someone recognized how powerful peer pressure can be in the impressionable minds of kids … so they’re harnessing it in a positive way.
Kids Gone Hunting (KGH) is a nonprofit organization represented by kids who host exciting hunting DVDs to encourage other children to get involved with the outdoors and hunting. I connected with Brenda Potts, executive director of the KGH Foundation, to get up to speed with where things are at today. Here’s what she had to say:
“The first Kids Gone Hunting DVD was developed through an intern project that helped raise money for Kids Hunting For A Cure. After the succes of the first DVD, a nonprofit foundation was officially formed to continue the momentum of the series with kids reaching out to kids through video and Web-based media. Today, the KGH Foundation creates DVDs of all-kids hunting, hosted by kids, and distributes them free to kids nationwide.”
KGH has released two DVDs so far, and will release the third, “Kids Gone Hunting: Friends Edition,” in February of 2013. The operation is funded by generous sponsors that understand the value of what KGH is trying to accomplish.
“We found that kids love watching other kids in their age group engaged in hunting,” Potts said. “As a result, they quickly decide, ‘If he or she can do it, so can I!’”
Of course, the organization also realizes that involvement in social media—primarily through a Facebook presense—will play an integral role in their growth. With a tactful approach, the same media that distracts kids from the outdoors can be used to get them motivated about it.
Without a doubt, this is a worthy cause to be associated with. But if you need extra incentive, it’s worth mentioning that during the next 2 months KGH will be running several promotions with chances to win a variety of prizes. Currently, if you “Like” their Facebook page you’ll be automatically entered in the “Hats Off to Our Armed Forces!” promo, featuring a prize package full of cool (11 to be exact) hunting hats. You can never have enough hats. Monitor the KGH Facebook page continually to keep up to date about other promos and news.
